The Jargon File

Community Building [and dividing] over the Internet

"The word HACK doesn't really have 69 different meanings. In fact, HACK has only one meaning, an extremely subtle and profound one which defies articulation."

Created in 1975 at the Stanford University Artifical Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), JARGON.TXT, or the Jargon File, collected together in a lexicon the slang used by young programmers in academia.

Originally intended only for use at Stanford, the Jargon File was FTPed to a computer at the MIT AI Lab, where it began to circulate among all the connected academic computer labs using the then-burgeoning Internet.

The rest, as they say, is history.
